The Albany Housing Authority recently received a high recognition from the Housing and Urban Development, and they hope to use it to supply much-needed affordable housing.
The authority was recognized as a high-performing agency.
The Executive Director said the department received the high distinction because they're doing everything they can to comply with the latest regulations.
One of the recent changes was allowing residents with a criminal record to have access to public housing.
Before, the organization had a zero tolerance policy in place.
"Being that we are a small housing authority and my hats off to all of the Housing Authority because achieving that is very hard," said Executive Director Roman Velasquez.
Albany Housing Authority is also working to acquire more property to address the public housing shortage.
