Valdosta teen death investigated as a homicide

VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

Valdosta Police are investigating the death of a teenager as a homicide.

Investigators say they found Zachary Bulter,19, dead Wednesday night around 7:45 at an apartment in the 1400 block of Baytree Road.

Butler was taken to Macon for an autopsy, where police said that based on evidence it appears that narcotics may have played a role in his death.  

Valdosta Police said the investigation into his death is still active, and if anyone has any information to contact the Valdosta Police Department.

Butler was a student at Valdosta State University.

The university released the following statement after Butler was identified as the victim in the fatal shooting:

The Valdosta State University community is deeply saddened by the unexpected death of Zachary Austin Butler, a current student.

The death of a student affects the entire VSU community, and every member of our Blazer Nation family sends the deepest expressions of sympathy to Zachary’s family and friends as they process this devastating loss. 

VSU offers counseling services and support to members of the university community who are experiencing bereavement and grief and want to talk to a professional about it. Students who wish to talk to a counselor should contact the Counseling Center, located on the second floor of Powell Hall East, at (229) 333-5940.

    Police found 26-year-old Michael Taylor shot at June Bug's Grocery store Friday night.  He died shortly after. The victim's co-workers said he was always willing to lend a hand. They believe that may have cost him his life.
