(WALB) - The Sabal Trail transmission pipeline is now in service.
The controversial 515-mile natural gas pipeline, running from Alexander City, Alabama to the Central Florida hub in Kissimmee, Florida was actually placed into commercial service Monday.
The pipeline runs through several counties in southwest Georgia.
The president of Spectra Energy, Bill Yardley, said now Florida Power & Light and Duke Energy will "realize needed firm natural gas transportation services to meet their power generation requirements."
When the pipeline's approved expansions are finished, it will be able to deliver 1.1 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day.
