How to protect your home while you're on vacation

If you're headed out of town at all this summer, there are some things to remember to avoid coming home to a ransacked house.

Law enforcement officers say you want to make your house look like it's being lived in.

Put timers on your lights in your home, so they'll come on at different times at night.

Get a neighbor to check your mail and pick up any newspapers.

Most importantly, keep information you put on social media vague when you're talking about going or being out of town.

"Don't post that you're on vacation," said Sheriff Billy Hancock. "Wait until you come back and tell everybody that you've had a great trip. If you leave and you're posting that the whole family's away, you're an open target."
