WALB staff honored, wins at Georgia AP Awards

ATLANTA, GA (WALB) -

WALB, South Georgia’s news, weather and sports leader, took home several awards in leading categories at the Georgia Associated Press Media Editors Annual Awards Banquet Saturday.

The event honored Georgia radio, newspaper and television stations selected as finalists for work completed in the 2016 year.

WALB Sports anchor Jake Wallace took home first and second place for Best Sportscast. Wallace, along with sports anchor and reporter Theo Dorsey, took second place for Best Sports.

WALB won 2nd place for Best Staff Coverage for its continuing team coverage of the shootings of Officer Jody Smith and Officer Nick Smarr who were killed while responding to a domestic call in December 2016.

WALB’s Digital team and MMJ Amanda Hoskins also won 2nd place for Best Multiplatform Coverage of a Single Story for their digital coverage of the shootings.

“I am very proud to see the WALB team be honored for their hard work,” said Bari Soash, News Director. “Our community has been through a lot over the past few months, and our staff has never stopped working hard to keep our friends and neighbors informed.”

“I am very proud of the quality work by our staff at WALB,” said Jim Wilcox, General Manager and Vice President of WALB. “With very limited local competition, these statewide competitions allow their work to be compared with the best in Georgia.”
