AMERICUS, GA (WALB) - This fall, Americus citizens will decide whether package stores can sell liquor on Sundays.
The City Council passed an amended ordinance Thursday night to allow package sale of all alcohol on Sundays.
This is just the first legal step to get the option on the ballot for voters.
Restaurants in Americus can already sell alcohol on Sundays.
This new ordinance would pave the way for stores.
However, Americus Package Store cashier Chintan Patel said Friday he is opposed to Sunday sales.
"We want to have a day off, stay with family," said Patel. "We are family people. We want to go to church and spend time with family. That's the only reason. We work six days and that should be enough to make money in six days."
The Sunday package sales referendum is expected to be on the ballot for Americus voters in November.
