SYLVESTER, GA (WALB) -

The Worth County Board of Education recognized the Georgia State teacher of the year.

Economic teacher John Tibbetts received a special award and a $3500-dollar stipend after winning the teacher of the year award.

Tibbetts was shocked he took home the title given there were nine other finalists.

As a retired Army officer who spent 21 years in the service, he's learned engagement is key to students' success in his classroom.

"I had some folks early on who worked with me and taught me that the more you can engage the kids the more you can bring the kids into it from an activity perspective, the better you are," said Tibbetts.

Tibbetts will spend the next year speaking at conferences across the state.

His platform will focus on pushing teachers to partner more with each other and for the community to partner with schools.

In October, he'll submit a packet for the national teacher of the year award.
