CORDELE, GA (WALB) -

A busy Cordele intersection will be getting a facelift, and it could attract more business.

The Georgia Department of Transportation awarded a $3.3 million-dollar contract to widen the intersection of U.S. 280.

U.S. 280 from Interstate 75 to Midway Road will be widened from two to four lanes.

It will enhance safety, reduce congestion and improve access to local industries.

GDOT staff said there's a lot of commercial properties including a truck stop and a few hotels in the area.

"Well Midway Road you have the technical college down there, you have a lot of industry down there. You have people who access the Inland Port from Midway Road so that's why it's important," said GDOT District Communications Officer Nita Birmingham.

The U.S. 280 project is one of 32 statewide transportation contracts GDOT awarded in March.

All of the projects include 138 miles of resurfacing totaling to $23 million.

The U.S. 280 project is expected to be completed by November 2018.
