LAS VEGAS (KTNV/CNN) - We’re all familiar with a caped crusader coming to the rescue, but what about a kilted crusader?

“I heard my landlord screaming at the top of her lungs, so the first thing I grabbed was my kilt, which is by the bed,” said Mike Withycombe, a former NFL defensive lineman who knows how to tackle.

Withycombe was still wearing his kilt days later as he recalled jumping in to stop the man who his neighbors say was threatening to kill a mother and daughter after lurking in the area all day.

He said he approached the man, telling him, “Look, man. It’s time for you to go.”

“I guess he wasn’t too worried about an old man in a kilt," said Withycombe, who's 52. "He decided to take a swing at me and woke up very happily to see the police there as they were handcuffing him."

As for the officers’ reactions when they arrived, he said, “Cops loved it. They are like, ‘Took him down in a kilt like a boss.’”

Withycombe, who played with the New York Jets. Pittsburgh Steelers and Cincinnati Bengals in the late 1980s and early ‘90s and later played for the Canadian Football League, has cuts all over his legs and feet from the fight.

But he said he would do it all again if he had to.

“I have a mother and two sisters, and I’ll be damned if I’m going to stand by and let a single mother lose her daughter to a predator,” he said.
