Former U.S. congressman and WALB anchor passes away at 76

TIFTON, GA (WALB) -

Former United States Congressman and WALB News Director and Anchor Dawson Mathis died Monday night.

His brother, Rick Mathis, announced on Monday that the 76-year-old former congressman died at the hospital in Tifton, where he had been under treatment for several days.

Mathis was the anchor and news director at WALB from 1964 until 1970.  

He then was elected as the second congressional district congressman for South Georgia in 1971, and served until 1981.

In recent years he has lived in Berrien County.
