OCEANO, CA (KCOY/KEYT/CNN) - One of your favorite burger toppings - and a salad staple - may cost you more in grocery stores.

Heavy winter rains have caused a lettuce shortage. Prices for lettuce at the beginning of the year were much lower.

Businesses like Sylvesters Burgers in Oceano, CA, are feeling the impact. Head chef Cornelio Diaz says they were paying $20 a case.

But that cost has now ballooned to $60 a case.

The heavy rain earlier this year is to blame for these skyrocketing prices.

The rain has caused gaps in planting, not allowing farmers like Tom Ikeda to get out in the fields to farm

Ikeda says with market prices so high it covers growing costs when the market is poor.

"As a farmer ... we are hoping this market stick around for a while," he said.

But the head cook at Sylvestors Burger has another viewpoint. "We are always hoping the prices go down so the prices don't have to go up," he said.
