AMERICUS, GA (WALB) -

Americus Police officers will honor their fallen brother in blue on his birthday this year.

April 5 will be Officer Nick Smarr's birthday.

Smarr was shot and killed in the line of duty on December 7, 2016.

In honor of Smarr, the Americus Police Department will host its first ever "Coffee with a Cop" on April 5, 2017.

Chief Mark Scott said it's a chance for people to meet with officers, get to know them, and raise any concerns they might have.

"I think that the tragedy that we've all had to go through has brought us together as a community," said Chief Scott. "It's opened up forums for us to talk about a lot of issues that weren't being talked about before."

Coffee with a Cop is set for April 5th from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

It's at the Bittersweet Coffee House on West Forsyth Street in Americus.
