FEMA opens late application window for victims with extenuating circumstances

Dougherty County Chairman Chris Cohilas had requested that FEMA keeps its Albany Disaster center open beyond Monday evening.

However, FEMA officials said that Joint Field Office (JFO) and FEMA Region IV said they were not able to justify the need to extend the DRC operations. 

But even though the center has closed, FEMA will accept late registrations for an additional 60 days after the deadline to close the Albany disaster center.

People who are registering from now on will need to mail a letter to FEMA explaining why they could not register by Monday's announced deadline, outlining the extenuating circumstances that prevented them from applying for assistance in a timely manner with accompanying documentation, if applicable.

Dougherty  County residents are, and will be, able to register for FEMA assistance the following ways:

Going online to DisasterAssistance.gov

Calling the FEMA  Helpline at  800-621-3362.  People  who  are deaf, hard  of hearing  or have a speech disability and use a TTY may cal l 800-462-7585. If you use 711 or YRS or require accommodations while visiting a center, call 800-621-3362.  

The toll-free  numbers are open daily from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.
