SAVANNAH, GA (WALB) - A giant industrial load that is too heavy for the most direct route for its Cocoa, Florida destination will travel through South Georgia, before it gets to the Sunshine State.
The convoy hauling the cargo comes to over half a million pounds, and is over 18 feet wide, and 250 feet long.
The DOT says the night travel schedule should reduce the impact on traffic, but motorists are encouraged to avoid the route if possible. Do not try to pass the convoy.
The Georgia Department of Transportation announced Monday that a huge machine rotor will enter Georgia from its Charlotte, North Carolina origin near Savannah. It will snake its way through Chatham, Bulloch, Candler, Treutlen, Bleckley, Twiggs, Houston, Dooly, Tift, Cook, and Lowndes Counties.
GDOT says that the part it's replacing will go back to Charlotte, though the time and route for that has not been announced.
