ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Kids playing the Dougherty County Elementary school basketball championship received a teachable moment in sportsmanship.
A close basketball game saw Robert Harvey Elementary win by just two points.
After the victory the 4th and 5th graders congratulated 2nd place Lincoln Elementary on a season well done.
Dougherty County started basketball tournaments at this level in 2000.
An all-time high 13 teams competed this year.
Throughout the season kids learn values such as teamwork, sportsmanship and accountability which was put on display at Albany high today.
"If you miss a layup at the end of the game and you're down by 2 points and you miss, that's going to bring the team down," said 5th grader Nore Rowe who was on the winning side. "And I don't want the team looking bad because I let them down."
Rowe learned about accountability. But there's much more gained throughout the year.
"One thing about Dr. Davis our principal he said we win with pride," said Robert Harvey assistant coach Valerie West. "We always keep our composure; we always have character. Rather we lose or win it doesn't matter we always keep our poise and that's what we did as a team."
It was the first ever championship for Robert Harvey Elementary school.
