THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) - A Thomasville teacher received a big surprise on Friday at Harper Elementary School.
Kelly Ellis, a third grade teacher, was honored as teacher of the year.
The school in the past has struggled with low test scores.
This year, administrators said things are a lot more positive.
School leaders said it's because of the dedicated teachers.
Ellis said her goal as a teacher is to help each and every child succeed.
"Its amazing, In my class we talk about college and the importance of graduating high school. The sky is the limit its important for children to know people believe in them," said Ellis.
Ellis was given the award during a ceremony on Friday.
Parents and school board staff attended the event as well.
