Americus city leaders break ground on $1M train depot station

AMERICUS, GA (WALB) -

Americus city leaders broke ground on their new train depot.

The million-dollar station will be located on South Jackson.

City leaders  started installing plumbing at the site.

The depot will have an open pavilion, similar to the station on Church Street, and it will have bathrooms and water fountains.

The platform will be concrete. 

City leaders hope the station will double the number of trips of people visiting the town on the SAM Shortline. 

"We're looking forward to expanding the service by the SAM Shortline. Currently they doesn't stop in the city of Americus every time. And so we're hoping now that will open that up so that they're able to stop here on their way to Plains," said Inspection Director Josh Roth. 

Americus' new train depot station was supposed to be completed six months ago but was delayed due to budget constraints.

City leaders said it should be completed in four months.
