ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Olympic gold medalist Jackie Joyner-Kersee will be in town on Thursday.

As a former Boys & Girls club member, she will be touring the new Thornton Club unit and attending their fundraiser event.

Boys & Girls Club staff said she will make her first stop at Alice Coachman to speak with kids around 9 a.m.

Then around 11:30 a.m. she will head over to Albany Boys and Girls Club Thornton Park.

Kersee was a former member of the East St. Louis, IL Boys & Girls Club, and will be getting a tour of Albany's newest facility.

The unit was recently remodeled to serve kids of east Albany.

The 'reimagined' facility which now includes a new roof, gym floor, and a second floor that features a teen hangout room and an innovation center.

President and CEO Marvin Laster said he's excited about the track star's visit.

"She will visit a local elementary school here that has some significance to her, especially in track & field in the Olympics. And then she will have a meet and greet with some civic leaders where the mayor is planning to present her with a proclamation," said Laster.

Kersee will end the day at the Boys & Girls Club 30th annual fundraiser dinner at Albany State University West Campus Arena at 6 p.m.

Last year, the organization raised more than $100,000. They hope to exceed that number this year.

Tickets are still available. The dinner costs $150 per person.

If you're interested in buying a ticket, call the Boys & Girls Club of Albany at  229-439-0916.
