Bus catches fire at Harper Elementary School

THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) - A Thomasville City School bus caught fire Wednesday afternoon at Harper Elementary School.

It happened around 2:40 p.m.

Fire Marshall Tim Connell said that the fire started under the canopy of the bus and there was no damage to school building.

Fifteen students were evacuated from the bus.

The bus driver attempted to put the fire out, but the fire department was called in.

No one was injured.

Harper Elementary School Principal released this statement :

A Thomasville City School Bus had an engine fire as is was waiting under the front canopy of the school.  Harper students were on the bus before the smoke appeared from underneath the bus. The teachers quickly removed the students from the bus and the Thomasville Fire Department was called. Mr. Hugans, Harper Principal was pleased with the quick response and sound decision making demonstrated by the teachers and students that were involved in the incident. There were no injuries and student dismissal was adjusted to allow Emergency Personnel to clear the scene. The Thomasville Emergency personnel responded quickly to scene and contained the incident before any damage to the building occurred. Harper students were given the opportunity to practice Fire Safety Drills during Bus Safety Week to prepare students for such incidents.
