Colquitt Co. schools to start break early due to high flu numbers

COLQUITT CO., GA (WALB) -

The Colquitt County School Board has made the decision to close school for students the next three days leading into spring break.

Many schools in Colquitt county have seen a high number of absences due to the flu.

Students will return back to school on April 3rd.

Doug Howell, the superintendent, says they have reached the tipping point to carry on normal operations with the number of students and staff out.

Howell mentioned two schools in the school district, Odom elementary and Hamilton elementary had the highest numbers of absences.

During the next several days all the schools will be cleaned and disinfected.

Howell says the safety and health of the students comes first.

He hopes the next few days will give students time to stay home and rest.

All school system employees will work the next three days

They will be off the following week for spring break.

    Here in Southwest Georgia the American Red Cross has been working the last couple of days to prepare for the storm.  The American Red Cross has been getting their relief supplies ready across the 19 county region.
