ALBANY, GA (WALB) - There are any number of specialty license plates you can buy when you renew your car tags down at the tag office.
We expect a new one supporting law enforcement will soon be among the offerings, and we whole-heartedly support the proposal.
Aaron Cosby of Sumter Co. came up with the "Back the Badge" license plate idea, after officers Jody Smith and Nicholas Smarr were shot and killed in Americus in December.
Those were just two of the nine Georgia law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty last year.
We agree with state lawmakers who want to show their support for those who wear the badge with a new specialty license plate.
Proceeds from the plate would go to the Peace Officers' Annuity and Benefit Fund. This fund pays retirement and death benefits to Georgia law enforcement.
The POAB paid benefits to both the Smith and Smarr's families after their deaths.
We look forward to passage of the bill, and the governor's signature, so we can show our support, and help those who protect and serve.
