HOUSTON (KTRK/CNN) - The free market is alive and well in Houston.

Two neighboring gas stations got into a bidding war and gas prices plummeted all the way to 79 cents. Both stations ultimately dropped their price to that figure, but the war continued as one station went as low as 78 cents.

You might have expected to see that in the 1970s, but today that's unheard of.

And people were clamoring to get in on the rare deal. Lines formed at both stations, with customers driving away with full tanks of the deeply discounted gas.

"The cheapest bottle of water is 99 cents, and our one gallon of gas is 79 cents a gallon," one man said.

The national average gas price rose 2 cents this week to $2.35 a gallon, according to the Associated Press. AAA reports the average gallon of regular unleaded in Texas costs $2.09 with Houston's gas priced at an average of $2.08.

Diesel fuel averages $2.58 per the AP, but these Houston stations marked it down to $1.99.

"If it's a gas war going on, I hope it's a trend that goes around the city," another man said. "We definitely need it in these times. Y'all know what I'm talking about."
