ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

As South Georgians prepare to spring forward this weekend, Albany firefighters want to remind you to check your smoke detector.

Albany Firefighters said people should use daylight saving time as a reminder to change out the batteries in your smoke detector.

Smoke detectors should be placed near the kitchen and bedrooms.

They also recommend you to replace the smoke detector if it's more than 10 years old.

"Is an early warning device. The sooner they know, the sooner we know, the sooner the call comes, the greater the possibility of us getting there to put that fire out," said AFD Assistant Chief Eugene Anderson.

For Georgia, daylight saving time will begin at 2 a.m. on Sunday.
