Pelham City Schools is taking Wednesday off to support their girls basketball team.

The Lady Hornets basketball team will be in Athens for a state championship game Wednesday afternoon.

Students and staff have been invited to join the Lady Hornets for the 2 p.m. tip-off at Stegeman Coliseum in Athens.

With no school, they have plenty of time to make the trip to meet the Lady Hornets at the University of Georgia.

"I was always rooting for our team because its our high school," said 11 grader Austyn Tucker. "It's a big honor for us to be able to get to the final four even to get to the state championship game but for them to win, it would be amazing."

Pelham will face Telfair County for the GHSA Single-A state title.

"I expect for them to turn Stegeman Coliseum into the Hornets nest," said Pelham girl's basketball coach Antonia Tookes. "Our fans are the best fans in the world."

The Lady Hornets are 29-1 this season. A 30th win on Wednesday would be their first state title since 1997.
