ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

An Albany homeless man was arrested for setting a business on fire early Monday morning, apparently trying to stay warm.

Surveillance video from just before 6 a.m. shows a man running out of the rain and under the carport of Electronic Systems and Design in the 100 block of Philema Road.

About 10 minutes later the man starts a fire, and later the fire gets out of control.

The man runs off, but police said he came back and tried to put it out with a garden hose.

A police officer recognized the man from the video, and within 45 minutes arrested him.

"When the beat officer saw him on the tape, he said I know who that is. It's Mr. Piland. And he went over there and picked him up," said Albany Fire Department Investigator Sam Harris.

Police charged Marty Piland, 51, with first degree arson.

He's known for panhandling at the intersection of Jefferson and Philema.

The damage to the building will be in the thousands of dollars, but the owner said they were lucky the entire building was not destroyed.
