ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

An Albany man is leading a new effort to help families in need this holiday season.

Vernorris Edwards is collecting toys and food to help the less fortunate.

He said he's starting a non-profit organization with friends.

They've already collected some items to distribute to local service organizations.

He says he just wants to give back to a community that has given him so much.

"This time of year is important because we are actually giving kids hope with the toys and letting people know that there are good people out there. Maybe I can change the mind of a couple people to make them want to do bigger things and help the community more," said organizer Vernorris Edwards.

You can drop off items at the Phone Hub on Dawson Rd through the end of the week.
