The International Olympic Committee has officially labeled cheerleading a sport.

Cheerleading and the combat sport Muay Thai were given provisional Olympic status which means they could apply in the future to be in the Olympics.

Sue Youngblood has coached competitive cheer for 40 years in south Georgia and says she's glad the sport is getting the recognition it deserves.

"Everyone has that point of view that it's spirit cheerleading," said Youngblood who serves as the Colquitt County cheer coach. "Standing on the sidelines, look cute, yell loud and cheer your team on. Competitive cheerleading is a (different) avenue of athleticism and it demands so much more."

The decision was made by the IOC executive board.
