ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Mediacom announced today its entire broadband network will have gigabit-speed internet by early next year.

It will be the first major cable company to operate on the platform.

Mediacom said southwest Georgia customers will enjoy 40 times faster internet speed.

Officials said customers' data usage has increased 35 to 50 percent over the past few years.

"We're seeing the need for faster speeds, greater bandwidth year over year and we're hoping that by moving forward and launching this gigabit service, we're going to be ahead of the curve," said Mediacom Sr. Director of Operations Phil Skinner.

Mediacom will begin rolling out its gigabit network in all its markets in the coming weeks.
