ATLANTA, GA (WALB) - Albany State and Darton are now just one step away from consolidation, after the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) gave its "OK" to the plan to merge Albany State University and Darton College.
The announcement was made Tuesday afternoon.
The consolidation has been in the works for just over a year.
The Board of Regents approved plans for the merger in November of 2015.
Since then, leaders at both schools have worked toward merging, following steps set out by the University System.
"Creating the new Albany State University will allow us to create an even greater impact on the economy and higher education for the citizens of the region," said the university systems of Georgia chancellor Hank Huckaby.
WALB has reached out to the university, but leaders would not talk. They said it is inappropriate to comment before the Board of Regents gives final approval.
That approval is the final step in this consolidation.
The Board of Regents will vote on Friday.
