CORDELE, GA (WALB) -

Police in Cordele are reminding people about Christmas tree safety.

Officials said you should turn off the lights when you're not around.

Never connect more than three strands of lights together.

Cut one to two inches from the base of the trunk.

Water your tree every day.

And use only non-flammable ornaments.

"Beware of what's going on beware of what's around the tree. Check your tree on a daily basis, if you have real trees. You want to wake up Christmas morning with a happy family so take the time and go the extra step," said Cordele Lieutenant Ketorie Sales.

You should also place your tree at least three feet from any heat source.
