TIFTON, GA (WALB) -

Fire officials are on the scene of a fire in Tifton.

Officials have said that it was a building that was under construction, and that no one was hurt.

The Tifton Mayor Julie Smith posted about the fire on Facebook, saying that it was an empty four story apartment building that was under construction.

Witnesses have said the fire was at the Oaks at Carpenter apartments in Tifton, but that has not been verified by officials at this time.

Thanks to the rainfall, the fire did not spread to the nearby buildings that did house residents.

"By the time the fire department got here, half the building was already on fire. And then we ran across the road and started watching, and the trees catching on fire and then we came back over here and the whole building was pretty much on fire and fell," explained resident Bailey Faison, who lives just across from where the fires was and alerted officials.

Faison also said that the building was supposed to be student housing for ABAC students.

Residents watched the fire for hours in the rain as the fire was put out.
