CORDELE, GA (WALB) -

This year, Cordele police have seen an increase in armed robberies, while law enforcement says armed robberies typically rise during the holiday season.

Police say they've made changes to decrease armed robberies in their city.

Cordele Police Lieutenant Ketorie Sales said his department began special patrol details in September. Since then, the city has only had three armed robberies, and one attempt.

Before that, they had 11 or 12 armed robberies or attempts from July to September.

They believe the decrease is thanks to the increased patrols. "We have officers going inside of businesses, speaking to the clerks, making sure everything's fine. For one, it makes the clerks feel a little bit more at ease knowing that an officer is paying more attention to their business," said Sales.

Sales says increased visibility of officers and patrol units helps deter people from taking criminal action, and the increased patrol has also cut back on shoplifting calls in Cordele.
