VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

Specially trained crisis negotiators from the Valdosta Police Department were called to a house on North Saint Augustine Road this morning, where a man threatened himself and others.

The officers held a long conversation with the 28 year old man who said he wanted to kill himself, and wanted to take others with him.

The call came in to Lowndes County E-911 about 7:30AM,

They were told a man was inside an apartment with another occupant, and was not only threatening to kill himself, but was also threatening to kill the other occupant as well.

They learned the man suffered from a mental illness, and had possibly been consuming an illegal drug as well.

The man gave up peacefully, and was transported by EMS to a hospital for treatment.

"This situation could have ended very badly had it not been for their efforts of officers, detectives, and negotiators. With the growing number of mentally ill subjects and drug abusers in our society, de-escalation tactics have never been more important," said VPD Lieutenant Adam Bembry.
