ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Bright lights, colorful costumes and magical creatures are bringing the story of the Nutcracker to life in Albany.
South Georgia Ballet dancers put the finishing touches on next weekend's performance of the Nutcracker.
Dancers practiced Sunday at the Albany Municipal Auditorium.
Ballet Theatre South takes extra time to go over steps and put the finishing touches on this year's performance.
"This is our first time in the auditorium for staging. So it's going to take awhile to get accustomed to new spaces and this is the first time our dancers will be working with props and set pieces. So it will be a slow but wonderful process," said Zan Twiggs, President of Ballet Theatre South.
These dancers put months of effort into entertaining South Georgia for one weekend each year.
"Girls and volunteers have been rehearsing since August, every Saturday. So this is our full week. We'll be rehearsing Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. School show is on Thursday and our full performances are Friday, Saturday and Sunday," said Twiggs.
Dancers say the Nutcracker performance challenges their skills.
It takes a lot of hard work, sweat and sore feet to make the show a success.
But they say they're ready.
"It gets us in the Christmas spirit. We love sharing the story and the excitement, the magic of Christmas," said Twiggs
For South Georgians, it's the grace and elegance of the dancers that keeps them coming back each year. They say it wouldn't be Christmas in Albany without the Nutcracker.
