AMERICUS, GA (WALB) - An Americus boy is making a name for himself as a chef.
Kaylon Harvey, 10, will appear on the Food Network over the next few weeks.
While he calls himself a "jack of all trades," like technology and helping mom around the house, Kaylon appears to be a future expert in baking.
"I noticed he was different from the time he was about six, seven months old," said Kaylon's mom, Pamela, who describes her son as adamant and determined.
It's obvious to those who meet Kaylon that he applies those characteristics to the hobby he learned shadowing his grandma, aunt, and mother.
"He would follow me around in the kitchen when I was doing breakfast or dinner or something," said Harvey. "When he began to talk, he would always ask, what was I doing, how do you do this."
"My passion for baking...my passion is baking! It calms you down. It soothes your mind," said Kaylon.
So, his mom encouraged him to apply for a kids' competition on the Food Network.
"One Saturday, he and I were laying on our bed just kind of watching one of the kiddie shows. I said, Kaylon you should apply for that," said Harvey.
So he did. Over the summer, Kaylon flew to Los Angeles for two weeks, competing on the "Kids Sweets Showdown."
"It's very emotional. He's so young to have experienced this big of a deal in his life," said Harvey.
"You have to rush, rush, rush," Kaylon said of his experience in the baking competition. "You don't have a lot of time. You have two hours to bake, decorate, finish."
While he can't reveal the results just yet, it's clear to see Kaylon doesn't plan on abandoning his talents any time soon.
"Just like he had talent, if he could go and we're from little old Americus, GA, there's some other kids that have greatness in them as well," said Kaylon's mom.
Kaylon will appear on Kids Sweets Showdown on November 30 at 8 p.m. and December 7 at 2 p.m. on the Food Network.
