AMERICUS, GA (WALB) -

Police in Americus want people to stay vigilant this holiday season after an increase in car break-ins the past few days.

Major Herman Lamar with Americus Police said it's common to see an uptick in these crimes around this time of year.

Of the 17 car break-ins in Americus over the weekend, more than half of those involved cars left unlocked.

Maj. Lamar said while these may not all be preventable, there are ways you can avoid these crimes.

"These are people that are just out there walking, checking door handles, riding checking door handles," said Maj. Lamar. "We encourage our citizens to help us help you. Lock your doors, secure your windows, take your valuables out of cars."

Americus Police use a "Clean Car Checklist" with reminders for citizens:

1. Lock all windows and doors.

2. Remove GPS and mounts.

3. Remove cell phone/smart phone.

4. Remove laptop/tablet computers.

5. Remove ALL electronic cords and power sources.

6. Remove book bags, brief cases, shopping bags, gym bags, and purses.

7. Do not leave money, bills, or coins out in the open.

8. Do not leave a firearm in your vehicle.
