ALBANY, GA (WALB) -
The treasurer of the Lee County High School Band Boosters was still in the Dougherty County jail Monday night, charged with stealing thousands of dollars from the organization.
Dougherty County Sheriff's officials arrested Cara Marchbanks, 38, and charged her with two counts of felony theft by taking.
She was initially arrested by Lee County Sheriff's investigators on October 23rd on four counts of theft.
Investigators said that since August 2015, Marchbanks used the band boosters credit card for $2,600 worth of personal expenses, from vision products at an optical store to her Verizon phone bill.
They said that she also withdrew $3,600 hundred dollars from ATMs and wrote two checks for cash to herself for a total of $9,600.
"She was charged here in Dougherty County because she used the Lee County Band Boosters credit card to make transactions for personal use," explained Lt. Cathy Parks with the Dougherty County Sheriff's Office.
Lee County School Superintendent Dr. Jason Miller released a statement saying band resources would not be cut because of the thefts.
Moving forward we are committed to making sure our band has all that they need to march and compete.
Lee County Investigators said that Marchbanks confessed after her arrest that she took the money to pay her bills, like her mortgage.
