MOULTRIE, GA (WALB) - Moultrie's Canopy of Lights is getting brighter this holiday season.
The City of Moultrie is switching to LED bulbs in this year's display.
"The LED lights are more durable, they are longer lasting, and they are going to be more vibrant in color. So, we are excited to see how that's going to turn out," Moultrie Main Street Director Amy Johnson said.
But the city is not throwing the old bulbs away. They're transforming them into Christmas ornaments.
"The ornaments have just become a huge sensation across South Georgia," Johnson said.
The old lightbulbs have been part of the holiday display since the 1940s when they were first used to welcome back troops from the war.
Each ornament comes with a story attached to it that explains the history of the bulbs.
The ornament cost $8.00 and the money will go towards the cost of the new LED lights and other improvements. They can be purchased at Moultrie's Main Street Office or by calling 229-890-5455.
This year's holiday lighting event will take place on Thursday, November 24, 2016, at 6:00 p.m. in Downtown Moultrie.
"Santa will actually come Thanksgiving night and light the lights. He'll have his reindeer here, the shops will be open, it's just a fun family time," Johnson said.
The Canopy of Lights will stay up through New Year's Day.
