AMERICUS, GA (WALB) -

Some folks in Americus have a greater appreciation for law enforcement on Tuesday night.

18 residents graduated from the first Citizens Academy the police department has hosted in nearly 10-years.

Over 11 weeks, they learned about officers' day-to-day responsibilities through ride-alongs and classes on issues such as gangs and use of force.

Participants said it was eye-opening.

"It taught me so much not to listen to what all the social media say because it's very different when you actually get in the car with them," said Dakayerion Thomas.

"I know to appreciate the cops more now then what I did before. I know what they go through. I sympathize with them and I put in lots of prayers for them," said Cheryl Josey.
