ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Restaurants in southwest Georgia offered special deals to veterans.
At Albany's Olive Garden, veterans earned a free meal.
Last year, the restaurant served approximately 570 veterans for lunch and 470 for dinner.
Pete Sharber was one of the hundreds to visit for lunch Friday.
Sharber served for 24 years in the military, 12 years as an infantry man and 12 years as a Chaplin.
He said the support he sees for troops now is a stark contrast to what he experienced when he returned home from Vietnam.
"It's just very nice of them and very thoughtful of them," he said, "and it shows part of our national unity that we need so very, very much."
This was the first year this Olive Garden has had a Fallen Soldiers Table.
