LEE CO., GA (WALB) - The Lee County Recreation Authority Board voted 3-2 Monday night to shut down Grand Island by December 15.
The course has struggled to meet its financial obligations in recent years, and the plan now is to build a new hospital on the property.
"The emotional side of it is still hard to get past. You know I think we like the golf course. It's just a matter of our responsibility not only to the people who come here but to the citizens of the whole county," said Parks and Recreation Authority Chairman Luke Singletary.
All employees, three full-time and 15 part-time, who work until the last day will receive severance.
The official sale of the property to the development authority for the hospital project probably won't be finalized for several months.
