CRISP CO., GA (WALB) -

The Crisp County Sheriff's Office mourned the loss of the Peach County Sheriff's deputy shot and killed Sunday night, and prayed for the deputy still in critical condition. 

Peach County Deputy Daryl Smallwood, a former Crisp County Sheriff's deputy, remains hospitalized after being shot twice Sunday night.

Deputy Smallwood spent five years as a Crisp County deputy.

Crisp County Sheriff Billy Hancock said that when any officer is injured or killed in the line of duty, it affects all law enforcement officers.

"It's kind of like a gut punch," said Sheriff Hancock. "You know those individuals, you've worked with those individuals, you've mentored those individuals. So, you take a personal hard look at what's happened."

Peach County Deputy Patrick Sondron, 41, was killed Sunday after responding to a call about a man threatening people with a rifle.

Sheriff Hancock planned to meet with Peach County's Sheriff Monday to offer any assistance, including allowing his deputies to fill in in Peach County.
