TIFTON, GA (WALB) -

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Tift County Sheriff's Office spent several hours investigating a violent homicide in Tifton.

It happened overnight, near the intersection of Emerson Bynes Avenue and Wilson Street.

The GBI said Friday afternoon that Odell Chaney, 53, of Tifton, was killed, apparently by sharp force trauma.

He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Jerome James Jackson, 53, also from Tifton, has been arrested and charged with Murder, Felony Murder, Home Invasion in the First Degree, and Aggravated Assault.

The victim's family said that they are still in shock.

"Just hoping he didn't suffer too much. Just seeing that it's kind of hard to know that's your brother...You never think...You always see that it happens to someone else. You never think that it would happen to someone in your family," said Chaney's sister, Saletha Clark.

Clark is asking members of the community to keep her family in their prayers.

Jackson is in the Tift County Jail.
