ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Hundreds of Marines decked out in formal attire on Thursday night for their annual ball.

Later, they cut a birthday cake.

Retired Lt. General Willie Williams who served as MCLB Commanding General spoke about what it means to be a marine.

Officials said the highlight of the evening is celebrating with the community.

"One of the things here in Albany that's unique we have a strong community partnership so not only do we celebrate as marines but we celebrate as a community, those two hundred 41 years," said MCLB Albany Commanding Officer James C. Carroll III.

Marines plan to honor it's rich history for the entire month.
