BAINBRIDGE, GA (WALB) - The smell of smoke still lingers in the River's Apartment community.
"I looked out the window and I was playing a game and I just saw it, it was a big fire," said Elijah Akins.
Akins lives right across the street from apartment 703 where the fire started.
"I thought that it will catch on and burn our house down too," said Akins.
Fire Chief Doyle Welch says the call came in at about 2:24 on Tuesday afternoon.
"Upon arrival with the first unit and myself we observed the flames coming out of the front part of the apartment area," said Welch.
It was there that they found Dominique Buggs who was inside at the time of the fire and had severe burns on her body.
"Her son at the time was not at home when the fire happened but we do have ten people that are displaced due to the fire," said Welch.
Ten people now without a home, something neighbors say weighs heavy on their hearts.
"I feel bad because they lost all their stuff, some people don't have enough money to buy another house," said Akins.
Fire officials said there was heavy fire damage in the living room area of the home, although they still don't know the exact cause just yet.
"To finish up our investigation, when she gets able to talk to us after her medical treatment, we will interview her and talk to her and come up with our conclusion," said Welch.
For now, officials said apartment 703 is a total loss and nearby apartment 704 has a lot of smoke damage.
Others in the same building have minor damages from smoke but still aren't able to return home.
