MOULTRIE, GA (WALB) -

A Florida woman lost nearly $17,000 after police said she fell for an online scam connected to South Georgia.

Moultrie police are now investigating after a woman from Clearwater, Florida said she was tricked into sending money to a man she met on a dating site.

She told police the man asked her to send money to Dubai, to pay for some of his tools that burned in a fire.

The man then gave a Moultrie address to the woman to send cash.

Major Bender said there are key signs that you're being tricked.

"Keep in mind, one, what are they sending the person the money for?" Major Bender said. "Two, how well do you know this person that you're sending the money to?  And three, does it make sense? Is this something that's logical and that you trust?"

Major Bender said another major concern for investigators is the possibility of this money funding terrorism.
