ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

A statewide tour stopped in Albany Tuesday afternoon to encourage voters to defeat Amendment 3.

Attorney Lester Tate and Republican State Senator Josh Mckoon held a rally in downtown.

The constitutional amendment would get rid of the independent watchdog group that oversees judges and replace it with one that answers to state lawmakers.

The Judicial Qualifications Commission has forced dozens of judges to resign because of ethics violations.

Tate said that judicial ethics and independence are most at risk.

"It promises apple pie and motherhood, but in fact is a restriction on citizens constitutional rights and I think it's important to vote no," said Former Judicial Qualifications Chairman Lester Tate.

The group will also stop in Valdosta, Savannah, Augusta and Atlanta this week.
