SUMTER CO., GA (WALB) - Community action councils across the state are working to get elderly people some assistance paying their energy bills this winter.
In Sumter County, the West Central Georgia Council began signing people up for the low-income home energy assistance program on Tuesday.
It's for people ages 65 and up, whose income is less than or equal to the 60% median income across Georgia.
The sign up happens in the fall when the temperatures start to change, since people will start running their heat more often.
So far this year, the signup in Sumter County has been on track to surpass last year's.
"Today alone, we've had over 400 people. I think at the last count, at 2:00, was 440 people," said Community Developer Tina Underwood.
Sign up will continue through Thursday.
You can call in and sign up at (487) 472-3607, or you can also walk-in at various locations.
The Sumter County location is located at 300 Cherokee St. in Americus.
It is open Wednesday and Thursday, November 2-3.
