SUMTER CO., GA (WALB) -

The death of an Americus-Sumter High School football player has been determined as an accidental drowning.

According to Sumter County's Coroner, Greg Hancock, 17-year-old Jamorrian Johnson died Saturday.

Officials say the call came in a little after 5 p.m.

The Sumter Co. Sheriff's Office, firefighters, and Gold Star EMS responded to the scene at a private lake about three miles west of Andersonville on Highway 271. The Air Evac Lifeteam of Cordele was also sent out to respond to the call.

Upon arrival, the Sumter Co. Fire Rescue Dive Team initiated rescue efforts. Five divers got into the water and retrieved Johnson within about 10 minutes.

Johnson was then transported to Phoebe Sumter Medical Center where he was later pronounced deceased.

According to officials, Johnson and two other people were fishing at the private lake.

The group pushed the boat off from the shore before realizing the battery was dead. The three then tried to swim back to shore.

Johnson did not make it, according to officials. 911 was called shortly after the incident.

Johnson is listed as a linebacker, number 25, on Americus-Sumter's roster.
