MADISON COUNTY, Ill. (KMOV) – An Edwardsville father pleaded guilty Friday to child pornography charges, months after his son pleaded guilty to crimes against children.

The father, David Von Bergen Sr., was sentenced to 15 years Friday after pleading guilty to one count of production of child pornography after recording children at a local church in 2015. Von Bregen Sr. has been ordered to pay $20,000 in restitution.

“The horribly disturbing acts of this defendant violated the trust and sanctity of his victims specifically and also the entire Zion Church family in their place of worship,” said State’s Attorney Gibbons in a news release Friday. “This vile person must be locked behind bars and kept there so he can no longer victimize the innocent or inflict his depravity on the good people of our community. This sentence today does just that.”

His son, David Von Bergen Jr., pleaded guilty to sexual assault and recording child porn on Oct. 28, 2016.

In 2015, officers from the Bethalto Police Department conducted a search at the Zion Lutheran Church and found several cameras throughout the church including in the changing rooms.

Madison County State’s Attorney Tom Gibbons said in 2016 that Von Bergen Jr. needs to stay in jail. “This person is a monster. A monster living among us in our community,” said Gibbons.

“It's the case that arose out of an investigation of downloaded child pornography which ultimately led to evidence that in fact the defendant had committed this sexual acts against these two young girls, and recorded some of the events,” said Gibbons.
